Edo State Governor Signs Edo Land Rate Bill Into Law

Amidst the controversies and protests which greeted the bill for a law to consolidate all land base rates and charges payable in Edo State into a single charge to be called land use charge, Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday signed the bill into law with charge to relevant agency to commence its immediate implementation.

Signing the bill into law at Government House, Oshiomhole, who was flanked by the Deputy Governor Pius Odubu, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Uyi Igbe, Secretary to the State (SSG), Prof. Julius Ihonvbere,  Dr. Pius Odubu, thanked the State Assembly for the speedy passage of the bill.

He, however, added that revenue accruable from the law would not only be deployed to infrastructural development but to take the state to the next level.

Different youth bodies had staged a protest to the Edo Assembly describing the passage of the bill by the Assembly as draconic and insensitive, adding that it’s passage would pauperize Edo citizens.

But, Oshiomhole while explaining the rationale behind the bill, said every responsible governor or leader must look inward in providing for the need of it people rather than relying solely on federal allocation which he noted could barely cater for the need of the people.

He said “the laws for this bill are already operational in other state like Lagos. So property tax is a reality and it is in the interest of the people”.
